How to use skills
A skill combines instructions and supporting material for a particular task. It helps AI follow a consistent approach, for example when summarising a document or reviewing code.
A skill describes when to use a procedure, the steps to follow and the checks to make. A package in the Agent Skills format has a central SKILL.md file and may also contain templates, examples and executable programs.
The marketplace includes both written guides and solutions with their own run page. Read each description to find out whether you can copy the content into a conversation, install it in a supported application or run it here.
Prompt: your request
A specific instruction, such as “Summarise this document in five points.” It tells the AI what result you want.
Skill: the method
A more detailed procedure with review criteria and, where needed, supporting material. It also explains how to approach the task.
MCP: the connection
Provides a way to access external data or actions. A skill can explain how to use a connected tool, but does not grant access to it.
1. Choose a specific task
For example, look for extracting obligations from a contract or improving the language of a text, rather than simply “document processing”.
2. Check what is included
Read the description, example, price and terms of use. Check which application, model and input data you need.
3. Follow the entry’s instructions
Start a runnable solution on its run page. Set up a downloadable or copyable package in the application it supports.
4. Test a short sample
Begin with a small amount of non-sensitive test data. Check that the result follows your requested format and includes the important information.
Provide the source text, intended audience and desired length. For example: “Write an executive summary of no more than 200 words. List deadlines, responsible people and open questions separately.” A suitable skill can add checks that help the AI follow this brief.
Compare the summary with the original document. If something is missing, identify it and ask for a revision. A skill supports the work but does not guarantee an error-free answer.
Buying a skill does not automatically include access to AI models or external services. Those may have separate fees and setup requirements. Using a skill does not change the model’s trained knowledge.
If a package contains executable code, check its source and required permissions before using it. A skill written for another application may have different installation requirements.
